It has been suggested that the Maltese surname Micallef may be of Irish origin. If so ,the name would appear to be a variant of the Irish surname McAuliffe which is in turn an anglicated form of the Gaelic MacAmhlaoibh meaning son of Amhlaoibh ( humfrey is the English form of this name.) The Mc Auliffe's are a branch of the MAC Carthys, one of the great Munster families, their chief resided at castle Mac Auliffe, near Newmarket in County Cork. The surname continues to be associated with that county, and with south west Munster in general.Sixteenth century sourses such as the state papers and Fiants, show that amongst others the head of the family MC Auliffe was refered to as chief. The last regognised chief bearing this name was one Michael Mac Auliffe, who was according to Dolton a colonel in the spanish army and died in spain in 1720.O'Donnovan however disagrees with this claim; he ascribes the position to a minor official at Kenmare in 1840.
The famous french physician Joseph Oliffe (1808-1869 was actually born in Cork,
His ancestral name being Mac Auliffe.
It should be noted that the surname Micallef has been recorded in Malta
since ancient times and its origins may lie in the personal name Micali,
a variant of Michael. This name is derived from the Hebrew Mickael meaning who is like the Lord.Beares of the surname Micallef are listed among the nobility of Malta. One Diana Micallef married Michel Angelo Crispo born (1650) who was desended from the Sovereign Dukes of Naxos and of the Islands in the Aegean. The micallef were granted the Blazon of Arms described above and which are listed in the Genealogy and Heraldry of the noble families of Malta.
Blazon of arms: Argent, a Greek cross indented sable.
Translation: the background colour Argent (white) denotes Peace and sincerity.
Crest: A cross as in the arms
Origin: Malta

I've read the info that anthony micallef has put together and yes I've heard this story from many of the "shopping centre hearaldry shops", one gentleman even sold us a copy of one of the coat of arms.
The irish story is a load of hog wash. Don't insult us by feding us this rubbish.
My grandfather used to tell us a story of two Russian nobles who joined the knights one a doctor and one a knight. This would tend to make sense as a significant russian contingent made part of the order.
Secondly the name Micallef has no Maltese meaning such as Fenich - rabbit or buhudger (wrong spelling)- pocket full of stones etc. look at their coat of arms, one shows a rabbit and one three stones.
Thirdly if you want to know what our coat of arms looks like just go to the museum, we've had it painted from the original texts, I was even able to find the original texts in the NSW Australia State library.
Fourthly my grandfathers story comes to light as I work with a person of surname Michaleffe - how close is this or if you want closer look at the russian name Michallef, the e in russian is pronounced as an o.
I probably can't back the stories up as I don't have the time to do the research, but please don't insult the family name by calling us Irish - we're not.
And don't get sucked in by people trying to make a quick buck at a shopping mall.

I have also heard that Micallef could have originated from the word 'Mhallef' which is a Supreme Justice in the Maltese Law Courts.

The surname Micallef might have an arabic origin from the word "Mukallaf" which means deligated, meaning someone which has been deligated to do a particular task.
